Fist of Justice #6 – Script

This issue was scheduled be released back in September.  But, here we are like eight months later and it’s still not done. Now, we may not have a large following, but what fans we do have are very dedicated people who honestly love what we’re doing. As such, and while the delay isn’t my fault, I feel like I owe everyone SOMETHING.

So, I’m going to post the script for #6.  It’s no replacement for the actual comic (you’re going to love the art), but this way you can at least get the story to some degree.  And whenever we get the darn thing done, you can order your copy and read it the way it was meant to be read.  But until then…

We’ll start at the, well, the “start”:

THE RETURN OF BLAZE!

PAGE ONE (splash)
[Blaze is landing a big, smashing uppercut on Fist’s chin, knocking our hero off of his feet]

CAP (Fist of Justice)
“It’s amazing how things can change in the blink of an eye.”

CAP (Fist of Justice)
“One second I’m watching an old man drive away – an old man who said he knew who I was – and the next his limo is a raging ball of fire courtesy of someone who should be somewhere between fifty and sixty years old.”

BLAZE
I have no idea what’s going on here, Fist-man, but if you’re involved then you no doubt deserve this!

SFX
FWHAM!!

CAP (Fist of Justice)
“He sure doesn’t hit like a sixty-year old!”

Fist of Justice #5 and Beyond

I don’t recall if Ed has mentioned this or not, so I’ll go ahead do it…
We got the purchase order from Diamond for FoJ #5 and the numbers WERE up, but still not enough.  We got a reprieve, though, and they’re going to go ahead and distribute the issue as scheduled.  That’s the good news.
The bad news is that unless the numbers really pop for #6, we’re probably done insofar as being carried through Diamond.  THAT DOESN’T MEAN THE COMIC IS DEAD, THOUGH!
We’ve been maneuvering to go to a digital format for some time, so folks with an iPod, iPhone or, I guess, iTunes, will still be able to get your fix of Justice.  After a while, we’ll collect the digital comics into a print edition, perhaps a 3-issue trade paperback or something.  I’m still trying to convince Ed that we should have the issues available at one of the P.O.D. places, but Ed’s concerned about the quality and price of the book.  A full color issue will still cost around $4 and we’d like to get away from that if at all possible.  My thinking is that if someone wants to pay $4 for the comic, let them.  I know I will, just so I can have a complete run in comic form.  The silver lining of the "bad news" is that if we forego the traditional comic format, we’ll save money. And not having a printing bill is a pretty lucrative looking option for Ed these days.
What are YOUR thoughts?  Will you just write the book off if we go to a digital/POD format? Will you wait for the collected editions? Do you have some other option you’d like to see?  It’s one thing to look at trends with other books and publishers and try to gauge what would be the best route to take, but hearing directly from the fans of the book is the only real way we’ll know how to proceed.
Of course, if everyone orders a couple of copies or convinces a friend to order one, we’ll be okay.  If the numbers were where they should be for an awesome comic of this caliber we wouldn’t even be considering any of the above!
Again, and I want to stress this – we’re not hanging up our red boots and big FJ belt buckle just yet!  In fact, we’ve got some really cool stuff planned – stuff that’s going to remind you why you liked the book in the first place or, if you’re new to the book, make you happy you finally gave it a shot.

Fist of Justice #1 a Top Seller

Out of curiosity, I ran a report that breaks down our top selling individual comic issues here at Beyond Comics (in Frederick).

  1. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583
  2. FIST OF JUSTICE #1
  3. SECRET INVASION #4
  4. DC UNIVERSE ZERO
  5. SECRET INVASION #5

This covers the past year or so.  The number one selling book, the ‘Amazing Spider-Man” with President Obama on the cover, sold 186 copies.  ‘Fist of Justice #1′ sold out at 100 copies.  The numbers aren’t 100% accurate – but close enough that FoJ is firmly stuck in the #2 spot.

Now, granted, the sales on #1 were high because we had a launch party, article in the paper and it’s a first issue – but the fact that it soundly beat out every other book over the past year (except for that damned Obama/Spidey comic) is pretty fuckin’ cool.

The Best Comics I’m Reading

Geez, for a guy that’s collected comics for a gazillion years and even WRITES one, you’d think I’d talk about them here, huh? I have no idea why I never have, to be honest. Not like it’s a dirty, little secret I keep hidden.
Hmmm.
Well, since I haven’t said anything about comics until now, I guess I should start with a list of what I’m digging the most out of what I buy each month. So, in no real order:

  • THE WALKING DEAD
  • CAPTAIN AMERICA
  • WOLVERINE
  • FABLES
  • THE LIVING CORPSE
  • THE BOYS
  • CROSSED
  • TERRY MOORE’S ECHO
  • FIST OF JUSTICE

I don’t read any X-Men books, so it’s weird to see ‘Wolverine’ there, but if you’ve been reading the “Old Man Logan” story, you know why it’s here.

Am I off my rocker with any of these picks? Is there something I should be reading? Let me know!
‘Walking Dead’ is, hands down, my favorite book. I’ve tried reading Kirkman’s other stuff and it just hasn’t grabbed me like this one has.
‘Living Corpse’ and ‘Fist of Justice’ for obvious reasons.
‘Crossed’ has only had one issue so far, but I really liked it and am quite curious where it goes, so it’s on the list for now.
‘The Boys’ is Garth Ennis doing superheroes and it’s good, depraved fun.
‘Captain America’ is hard to shoehorn into a tidy description. It’s not just a superhero adventure and it’s more than a crime/spy story. It’s a really well written book with characters that happen to wear costumes and have powers.
And ‘Echo’ is just fun. Plus, Terry Moore draws hot chicks. :)
