As a Country, We are Screwed

It’s no big revelation that our society is going to hell.

If you’re a Right-Winger, it’s because Obama is the devil and we’ll all be Socialists saluting a solid red flag with one big star on it.  If you’re a Left-Winger, it’s because we’ll all die from lack of affordable health care.  If you’re in the middle, it’s because both sides are so goddamn crazy that you’ll go batshit insane from osmosis.

However, right and left isn’t what really drove home the subject title.

No… a grade school teacher I know gave a student a “C” on their report card.  Well, “gave the student” is really correct; the student EARNED a “C” through careless work.  While the student is bright and quite smart, s/he has a bad habit of rushing through work and not checking anything.  As a result, mistakes are made.  My teacher-friend told the parents at mid-term “So and So is very bright, but s/he needs to slow down a little and check their work”. But when the reports cards come out and s/he is awarded a “C” for their shoddy and careless work. So the kid goes home crying and the next thing you know, the parents have called requesting a meeting – not with my teacher-friend, but with the principal of the school.  They are livid that their precious little fuck-up got a “C”.

What is wrong with this picture?

The parents were told their child was making the mistakes that resulted in their AVERAGE grade.  Did they speak to their kid?  Did they check the kid’s work to see if Einstein was being more careful?  No.  They went about their lives, hoping other people would raise their kids.  And when that didn’t happen, they couldn’t wait to point their fingers at someone.

Now, hey – not all teachers are perfect and my teacher-friend isn’t the greatest teacher to grace the halls of academia, but MOST teachers are doing what they do because they love kids and helping them learn is very fulfilling.  Let’s face it, the good ones aren’t paid what they’re worth so it ain’t the lure of easy money pulling people into the teaching profession.  So, when a kid brings home a “bad” grade, it’s probably not the teacher being vindictive.  In fact, the teacher probably feels a bit of guilt over that bad grade – to them it could be viewed as a slight bit of failure.  So to “blame” the teacher for anything less than an “A” on a report card falls on two or three shoulders, and the teacher is NOT one of them.

As long as we, as a society, continue to rely on others to take care of us and then blame them when they don’t provide 100% of what you expect, we are going down a spiral path to fucked-up-ed-ness. You see, contrary to belief, it doesn’t take a fucking village to raise a child.  It takes one or two loving and caring parents. And when it becomes time to lay blame we need to listen to the words of the late, great Michael Jackson by starting with the “man in the mirror”.

The “Sanctity” of Marriage

I’m not in the greatest of moods today so I figured I’d go ahead and get this off of my chest.  I’ll probably get some people mad but at this point, right now, I just don’t care.  With that said…

This whole “sanctity of marriage” thing that the Religious Right keeps trotting out is a pile of shit, plain and simple.  To say that allowing same-sex marriages will destroy the “sanctity” of marriage is about as accurate as saying feeding totrtilla chips to dogs will make it rain.

I’m not going to start quoting scripture and providing examples of this or that from the Bible.  I’m not an overtly religious person and since the Bible can be interpreted in numerous ways it doesn’t even seem worth the time to quote anything.  Besides, by providing a quote to help us define or understand the sanctity of marriage I’d be damning my opposing view right off the bat.  But, hey, you know what? What the heck, let’s look at a short snippet I found on the website for the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.  Why them?  Why not.  They came up early in my Google search and, I mean, the Bible is the Bible, right? Shouldn’t matter WHO is quoting it.  Anyway:

Because God has created and instituted marriage as a lifelong covenant (Matthew 22:23-30) and because the marriage covenant is to reflect the strength of God’s covenant love for His people (Hosea 3:1), any variation from His ordained decree is harmful to the participants and in violation of God’s mandates for all people (Mark 10:11-12)

So there’s our baseline.  Prior to what I quoted they clearly quote that God intended for marriage to be between a man and a woman.  Fine, we’ll take that.

BUT…!

Shit has CLEARLY deviated from what was written to what is practiced today.  Nearly 50% of marriages will end in divorce. That’s not a hard fact, but a fairly accurate assumption.  Now, take those two people who got divorced and let them re-marry.  There’s a 60% chance that those marriages will end in divorce.  Let one of those folks marry a third time and you’re looking at a nearly 75% chance that another divorce lawyer will be making some money.

Now, looking at those numbers and it certainly seems to me that there’s a shitload of heterosexual people totally pissing all over God’s word.  Remember, “any variation from His ordained decree is harmful to the participants and in violation of God’s mandates for all people”.  So much for the sanctity of marriage.

So, what I’m seeing here ISN’T so much that same-sex marriages would harm the sanctity of marriage but that it’s… something different.  And that’s what it boils down to – gay people are “different”.  Just like black people are different because they are a different color.  Why, maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to marry, either.  OH!  That’s right – we’ve already been down that road.  But, thankfully, we realized what bullshit that was.  And now not only can two black people get married, they could each marry a white person if they wanted!  What an understanding, open and loving society we are.

It’s not about ignoring God’s word.  It’s about being afraid.  Being afraid that something different might effect the way of life that you’ve grown accoustumed to.  Afraid that allowing gay people the same right to marry that straight people have will “cheapen” or “lessen” what marriage means.  Just like, y’know, letting blacks marry.  And that’s just an ignorant way of looking at things.

Back on Track

Well, it’s been about 10-15 minutes since CNN called it in favor of Barack Obama and I’ve gotta say I couldn’t be happier.
I’ve railed here (and on other versions of imboden.org) over the past five or six years that we were going to hell in a hand basket. Our civil liberties were slowly and obviously being stripped away, we were pushing everyone’s buttons and moving ever closer to igniting a third World War. Over the past couple of months we’ve seen our financial and economic markets go down the shitter which was really just the culmination of the past year of mounting credit card debt and mortage foreclosures.
Is everything going to magically change at the end of January ’09? No, of course not. But I believe we’re on the right track in getting things back to a point at which we can go to bed at night and not worry as much about what might happen as we slept. So now lets see if we can put the partisan shit behind us and work together to repair the cracks and heal the wounds we’ve suffered.
And most importantly – what an incredible moment in history we’re all a part of. As much hate and racism that we still see every day, we have just elected a black man to be our Commander-in-Chief. If that doesn’t instill a bit of hope in everyone, I don’t know what will.

Post-Debate Thoughts (and a funny video)

I’m ready for all of this to be over. It’s well beyond time for us to move on and get to work fixing all of the sit that is wrong with this country.
The one thing that bothered me the most (well, at least that stands out in my mind) about this last debate was McCain constantly harping about “special needs” kids and what a fucking uber-genius Palin is when it comes to them.
Well, no offense to “special needs” people, but we’ve sure got a fuck load of more important things to worry about right now. I mean, we can’t exactly afford to provide for them if we’re all living in cardboard boxes, pissing and taking dumps in a Mason jar, can we?
And c’mon, John – people at your rallies want to fucking kill Obama! Don’t gloss that shit over by saying something along the lines of “There’s always going to be a few bad eggs”. You and your right wing, fear-mongering cronies know exactly what you’re doing by allowing the country’s God fearing, narrow-minded idiots to call the man a terrorist and to call for his head.

And now for something completely different:

Finally Seeing the Obvious?

I’m probably going to rankle a few feathers with this, but so be it.
I’ve noticed during the past few weeks, and even more so lately, that the Republican party fits into two categories; The affluent and well-schooled on one hand and the middle-class less-educated on the other.
The smart ones don’t bother me so much. While there are many issues I have with them, it’s the fucking idiots that scare me. The ones who think Obama is a muslim. The ones who hear a sound bite and are suddenly experts on the topic of who or what Obama has supported in the past, despite the fact that said sound bite is entirely out of context.
These are the same dumb fucks that bought shit loads of duct tape and surplus gas masks. The same ones who believe Saddam Hussein masterminded the 9/11 attacks. They peer out through their curtains at their neighbors and call the police when someone with brown skin is taking photographs in a public place.
The democrats, on the other hand, all appear to be… average. They aren’t loaded with cash and have a diploma instead of a G.E.D.
Naturally there are exceptions to the rule, like anything. But in general, this is what I see and it makes me nervous. Despite all of the technological and social advancements we’ve made as a country, we are still young. 233 years, right? Look at how long other countries have been around and how many times they’ve dealt with social upheaval and civil wars. Revolts and revolutions dot the timeline of many countries. All except ours. And some people will say “But Mike, we know more now than those countries did back then. We’re more civil and accepting.”
And in response, all I need to do is point at the McCain/Palin supporters and shrug.
